Factory tours are back & we welcome the Morgan Owners Club to GBS.....

A_IMG_1932.jpg

We are pleased that the GBS Factory Tours that we offer are now back. On Saturday we welcomed the Morgan Owners Club to GBS for a factory tour. The Morgan Owners Club were due to come last year but due to Covid-19 we were unable to safely offer Factory Tours.

It was great to see everyone arrive in their Morgan sports cars and to have them all parked together outside the factory for photographs. The tour was led by Richard and John which covered the workshop, design room, clean assembly room, engineering machine shop, parts and spares store and shop and then back to the showroom where we finish.

Our GBS Factory Tours are free but we ask for a kind donation to be made to our chosen charities which are Cancer Research UK and Notts & Lincs Air Ambulance. Please click here for more details about the GBS Factory Tours that we offer or contact us.

GBS Zero Motul Edition livery competition winners announced!....

A_GBS Competition Entries Montage.jpg
A_GBS Zero Motul Edition Logo FINAL.jpg

With the judging completed in the livery design competition for the prototype Motul-Edition GBS Zero, Motul, Witham Motorsport and Great British Sportscars are delighted to announce the overall winning design and also the winning entry for the under 16 age group.
The winning design for the car came from Bedfordshire’s Martin Lines, whose livery concept was chosen from a number of excellent entries by the panel, which was made up of Motul, Witham Motorsport and GBS Zero Directors in what was a generally very high standard of entry. Martin’s design was selected for its ingenious use of all of the GBS Zero and Motul creative branding areas.

Martin’s winning design will be revealed on the prototype Motul-Edition GBS Zero, when it is unveiled at The Classic at Silverstone at the end of July, for which Motul is the lubricant partner. Martin and family will be Motul guests at the event for the public reveal of the car and Martin’s prize also includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the GBS factory at Ollerton in Nottinghamshire. The design will remain secret until the event.

The prize for the Under 16 category goes to Kent’s Kaira Milburn, who is 10. Kaira submitted an amazingly colourful design, as can be seen here, below left. Kaira’s concept impressed many of the judging panel with its current relevancy for the UK as well as its bold use of colour. Kaira will also win family tickets for The Classic at Silverstone, as well as a selection of Motul merchandise.

“We had some great entries for the competition and were so impressed by the standard that it was very hard to decide which design to choose - so I would like to hugely thank everyone who took the time and the trouble to enter,” enthuses Motul UK & Ireland Area Manager, Callum Goodland.

Nigel Bottom, MD of Witham Motorsport added, “It was a really close-run thing, as the car would have looked really good in various of the livery ideas that were submitted, but I think when people see the actual design we chose, when it is unveiled at Silverstone in July, they will see why it was a winning livery.”

Motul-Edition GBS Zero

The Motul-Edition GBS Zero, features a host of Motul-inspired design features unique to this partnership and is currently being prepared for painting in the special Motul Build Bay in the GBS factory, in Nottinghamshire. In the meanwhile, work continues on the car’s 2.5 litre Ford Duratec engine, which is being built by renowned motorsport engine builders and suppliers of the engines for the British FIA Formula 4 championship - for which Motul is the specified lubricant - Neil Brown Engineering.

From its machining of metal billets, through all of the necessary turning, drilling and assembly processes to the first fill of all lubricants, as the final part of the car’s journey to finished automobile, Motul products are being used throughout. There will be regular updates on the build, and a short film on the car coming together, illustrating Motul’s “Cast, Drilled, Filled” concept,  will air in August.

As Motul UK Distributors, Witham Motorsport are the driving force behind the project. As Nigel Bottom explains, “ The impressive engineering talent of GBS meant there was a great story to be told about building a car from start to finish uniquely using the whole array of lubricants from Motul. The car project is a logical extension of this concept of Cast, Drilled, Filled and so we have embarked on what is a truly novel venture for a lubricant brand.”

We recently received some test and sample products of the New Motul Car Care product range which we have used and tested on the Zero demonstrators. Our apprentice Will is responsible for keeping the Zero demonstrators clean and he put the products to test. He was very impressed with them especially with the Glass Cleaner, Insect Remover and Express Shine which left our demonstrator looking like new. Will said “ I will be buying some this to use on my own car”.

The Motul Car Care range can be seen and purchased online from our new Kit Spares website or directly from our Kit Spare show room shop.

Talk through Customers Zero Mazda build that we recently presented to IVA......

We often have some very nice Zeros and other sports cars that are with us in the workshop for various works like the IVA Service, MOT Testing, Track Day Preparations and more. Including this very nice Mazda Zero build, that was built by GBS Customer Kevin Broomhead. Which is a great example of a Zero Mazda build, and we wanted to share more with you. So whilst it was with us in the workshop, Matt our workshop manager talks you around it in detail. Click here to watch the video on our GBS YouTube Chanel.

The Mazda based Zero kit uses the Mazda MX5 as a donor. The Mazda MX5 (Miata) serves perfectly as a donor, and is readily available worldwide with over 900,000 donor cars produced. The Mazda MX5 donor Zero utilises (Mk1, Mk2, Mk2.5) from 1989 through 2005 in either right or left hand drive.

You can select from a variety of packages to suit all budgets from our starter kit through to a complete kit of components that can be assembled easily by yourself. More details can be found here on our website about the Zero self build options.

Kevin is now waiting for the age related registration to come through anytime, then he can enjoy it on the road. Hopefully Kevin will also be joining us at our Cars & Coffee event, so you can see it there too. Click here for more details about our GBS Cars & Coffee event that is taking place on Saturday 26th June at GBS.

Zero painted and builds progressing..... Send us your build photos?

A_01 copy.jpg
A_d4ba9a47-1573-4c25-a42e-05573e97dd23.jpg

Its always nice to receive photos of Zeros being enjoyed and build update photos. We recently received this photograph from GBS Customer Chris McQueen of his newly painted Zero, which has now been fully painted in British Racing Green. We prepared and presented Chris’s Zero to IVA last year, where it can be seen here in aluminium, the full paint really does transform the Zero and is now a popular option. You can see more recently painted Zeros on our GBS Instagram.

Another Zero Ultimate Self Assembly build that we painted and delivered to GBS Customer Jim Burge end of last year is coming along very nicely and we can’t wait to see it on its wheels. This Zero will be powered by the 2.5 Duratec engine on ATR Throttle Bodies along with all the other options and upgrades that we offer including the full carbon fibre trim.

It looks like we will be seeing a lot of new Zeros that are now registered and on the road at our Cars & Coffee event that is happening next month, visit our event page for more details. Click here to send us your photographs of your Zero.

NEW PARTNERSHIP PROJECT WITH MOTUL..... The Zero Motul-Edition.

A_GBS Zero Motul Edition Logo FINAL.jpg

We are excited to announce our new partnership project with Motul and Motul UK Distributors Witham Motorsport. Motul and the Witham Motorsport have supplied us with their products for several years and we are excited to be working with them on this new  project, which will be revealed end of July at the Silverstone Classic Show who Motul are also in partnership with.

The Zero is hand built bespoke to your individual specification and this Zero Motul Edition is certainly an example of that, the car that has been spec’d out between ourselves and Motul has some very nice unique Motul Design features that we can’t wait to share with you.

The Zero Motul Edition will be powered by a Ford Duratec engine, specially prepared by Neil Brown Engineering, the company that provides the motive power for the UK FIA Formula 4 championship  - a series where Motul is proud to be the lubricant partner, providing the spec engine oil for all competitors.

We believe this is going to be the first car in the world to be made and run on lubricants from the same manufacturer, in this case Motul. From cutting oils to hydraulic fluids used in the manufacturing process to make all the parts, to fluids used throughout the car, including: engine oil, gearbox oil, brake fluid, engine coolant, greases and even Witham screenwash, this will be made to a performance standard with bespoke specifications.

Also Launching immediately is a competition where enthusiasts can design the livery for this prototype car and subsequent production examples. From today, through to the end of May, anyone in the UK can download the car’s blueprint drawings as part of an official entry form on a dedicated competition webpage, which they can then design up and submit, for the chance to be part of the official unveiling as Motul’s guests at the Silverstone Classic, seeing their livery design becoming reality.

This somewhat special opportunity will see the winner receiving family passes to be Motul’s guests at Silverstone’s Classic and some great Motul gear will head the way of the winners together, of course, with the overall winner seeing their design come to life. A panel of judges, which will include some well-known names from the world of motoring, will decide on the winning entries.

Updates on the Motul-Edition GBS Zero can be found on Motul, Witham Motorsport, GBS and related UK Social Media.
More details of the Livery Design Competition and official entry form are available here .
The Classic at Silverstone runs from the 30th of July to 1st August.

We are currently working on many other videos that we will be sharing on our YouTube Channel with you very soon, so keep checking!

Customer enjoys Hill Climb in the Zero…..

Earlier this week it was nice to receive some photographs from a GBS Customer who at the weekend enjoyed doing a Hill Climb Sprint in his Zero at Aintree, where he came third in his class.
Its great to see everything opening up again and events like these happening, we look forward to being back out on the track later in the year with you all in the Zeros.
Its our GBS Zero Run Out this Saturday (1st May) so we look forward to sharing more photos and videos with you from that next week. To join us in your Zero and to see more details please click here.

Behind the scenes of how the Zero Chassis is Powder Coated....

The Zero chassis is powder coated as a standard option on all self build kits and factory builds and is a very important part of the Zero build. The powder coating process makes the chassis and components more resilient, gives a superior finish to paint, is long lasting and hard wearing and offers excellent corrosion protection. Here we share with you more details on the process and a few behind the scenes photographs of the process in action.

AA_IMG_4840.jpg
A_IMG_4972.jpg
A_IMG_5001.jpg

Once the Zero Chassis production is complete and all the required welds are flattened off, the chassis is now ready for the Powder Coat process to begin. Here you can see the process of what happens when a Zero chassis is powder coated.
The chassis is placed in the Shot Blasting Chamber where it is blasted, the chassis is then blasted, the blasting process removes any dirt from the chassis. Then the powder is applied using static charge. This is a two stage process first being primer, and the second black satin top coat. The Chassis is then placed in the oven and heated up to 200 Degrees. This allows the powder to fuse and bond with the chassis, this process is done over a period of time. Whilst the chassis is still hot from the primer, the final top coat is applied using the same electro static process. Once again the chassis is placed back in the oven for the final time to be fully baked and hardened. Then we have a finished Powder Coated Zero Chassis ready for the build to begin.

We always have a workshop full of Zeros and often have other interesting cars with us that we are doing work on and bespoke fabrication. One GBS Customer has a Zero and also owns this Repco Brabham sports car which some of you may have seen in the workshop when you visited last year. It was with us for engine, electrical and custom works and earlier this year it was back with us for the geometry set up and to prepare it for its test and set up day at the track.

Where last month we booked a test day at Blyton Park for the Brabham to be be put through it paces on the track to see how it performed, some of the GBS Workshop team also attended to make sure the set up was correct and to make any required adjustments to the setup. It was a successful and enjoyable day and the car performed well with only a few minor tweaks required. Denis also enjoyed several laps of the track in his Zero too, and can’t wait to join us on our next GBS Track Day. The Brabham is now all set up and ready for its Hill Climb event which is happening later next month, we look forward to hearing how it gets on.

Its always great to see what customers also have in their car collections along with the Zero, and we are pleased to offer a full range of workshop and engineering / fabrication services for the Zero and other sports cars. Click here for more details about what we offer including our IVA Service.

It was also great to receive some photographs from GBS Customer Simon Murphy who’s Zero passed its IVA test earlier this year, which is now all registered and being enjoyed on the road. Also below are two other very nice Zeros that were IVA tested and registered last year that have been out and about being enjoyed.

To enhance our manufacturing capabilities here at GBS, we recently invested in Autodesk software platforms via Cadspec. We wanted to design, manufacture as much as we can in-house and this gives us a lot more flexibility on the design, options and performance, which we can then pass on to the customer.

We are pleased to say that we are really pleased and excited about the new software Autodesk as it is helping us to grow our manufacturing and engineering capabilities. On a recent component that we had in production it saved us a whole 7 minutes, which is a massive time saving.

We manufacture a full range of components in house for the Zero and other sports cars, to see more about the products that we manufacture please visit www.atrproducts.co.uk and follow us on Instagram to see more behind the scenes of what we are upto.

It was also great to be featured in the March issue of the MTD Magazine about our recent investment in Autodesk with Cadspec. We look forward to working with MTD Team again later this year and doing more track days and events together.

All of the ATR Product range is available online from Kit Spares, visit www.kitspares.co.uk to see the full product range.

Father & Son enjoy their Zero Build..... See what they say about it?

A_4349593f-9131-40a0-b014-f69e7055c7d7.jpg
A_01.jpg

We first met Father and Son Jerry and Matthew Haller in January 2019 at the Autosport’s International Show at the NEC in Birmingham when they visited our stand. Soon after they visited us at the factory and enjoyed a test drive in our Zero demonstrator where they then placed their order for their Zero Self Build Kit. Their build is now complete and we were delighted to have had it with us in the workshop for our IVA Service that we offer, and after passing its IVA test last month and now fully registered it will soon be collected ready for them to enjoy this summer.

As the Zero Self Build option is a popular project for Father and Sons to enjoy together we asked Matt if he would write a few words for us about his experience building a Zero and how they found it………

It all started at the Performance Car show at the NEC in Birmingham- where the GBS stand caught our eye. My dad and I were looking for a car project and so the sound of building a high performance seven style kitcar was fantastic, and it didn’t take long for us to order a kit.

Our chassis came panelled and painted which was a very helpful start as we were complete novice builders. We knew a bit about cars, but we were hardly experienced mechanics.

We loved to figure out how things went together and why they did. The satisfaction of getting a job done was brilliant. I think we both agree our favourite jobs were dressing the 2.5l Duratec engine with ATR product parts, and the suspension, again using ATR dampers. Doing electrical work on the car was a dream, due to GBS’s wiring harnesses- not a tangly mess of wires anywhere in sight!

However, the build was not always easy for us. The engine and gearbox installation was tricky, as well as the diff installation. But the harder the job, the better the feeling you get once completed. Building your very own car is not your average project, and it was a privilege to have such a helpful team at GBS to aid us along the way.

It was quite simply one of the best things we have ever done- fantastic fun and an amazing learning journey. I was 16 making this car with my dad- the amount I have learnt (both about the working of cars and technical skills) is astonishing. The build process has also gone towards my Gold Duke of Edinburgh award and an Extended Project Qualification Award (EPQ).

We are very excited to get the Zero on the road, and we look forward to being involved in the kit car community. We are also certain that because of the incredible experience building a zero kit car- it wont be our last build! - Matthew Haller (February 2021).

As its National Apprenticeship Week we thought we would share an update on our two fantastic apprentices that we have here at GBS.

Thomas, who is based in our machine shop and engineering department has been with us for many years now since 2016 and has progressed to now be studying a HND Mechanical Engineering course at Rotherham College where he attends one day a week.
Thomas Said "It's been a great experience for me and I would recommend the apprenticeship to other people”.

Our most recent Apprentice to join the GBS team is Will, who has been with us several months now and we are delighted to have him on our team. Will is based mainly in the GBS Workshop, where he is involved in the Zero Builds, IVA preparations and much more. Will has also enjoyed time spent in each area of GBS to get an understanding of what we do and to learn about the components that we design and manufacture for the Zero and other cars inhouse.

Will has now started his college course which is Level 3 Engineering at West Notts College in Mansfield where he also attends one day a week. Due to Covid-19 and the lockdowns the start dates of their courses were delayed slightly and the lessons have been online so far. Hopefully in the next few months the colleges will be open and students will be able to attend in person.

We have a fantastic team here at GBS and we are all very proud of our two apprentices who are both very valued members of our team. Hopefully you will get to meet them later in the year at our GBS events and Track Days.

The next generation of car builders are the future to the British Motor Industry.
