GBS 4wd high performance EV with integrated carbon structure.....

The whole GBS Team is proud to share with you an exciting new project which we have been working on behind the scenes for the past few years which has recently come to a point where we can share and show case what we have been creating.

Along with two other partners we were involved in this project to create an all-new Low Carbon super Car, this project focused on a zero emission, high performance super car for low volume production.

The project has been supported by innovative UK whose involvement has been a key part in GBS journey towards EV zero emissions, collaborative R&D nature of the project has allowed GBS as a smaller niche vehicle manufacture to push the boundaries of technology and design, whilst increasing the companies skills and engineering expertise in low carbon technologies giving accelerated progress of our low carbon technologies toward volume production product.

This project pulls together a number previous R&D programs, and development into one exciting concept car, that was designed to provide a concept/engineering platform for future projects with leading sports car performance and establish a superior position of zero emission vehicles in the sports car market.

It featured a four-wheel drive electric system with 220KW and 980Nm per motor fitted to each corner giving in excess of 1,100Hp and a weight of 1100Kg, fitted into a lightweight carbon fibre monocoque chassis, giving true super car performance with zero emissions.

GBS were responsible for the overall vehicle design and packaging and the design and manufacture including the new lightweight chassis using our innovative low-cost carbon fibre processing technology that we have developed inhouse. We also developed the vehicle styling, interior and ancillary system for the prototype.

The project has integrated four Yasa P750 motors with torque vectoring for increase control and performance, and we have worked closely with Yasa on the development and use of their own Yasa motor controllers, the lithium-ion Batteries are a dual chemistry set up with pouch cells from A123 giving the car a combined 60Kw hours and the ability for rapid charging and extremely high output from the high voltage system.

Going forward we are now looking for investment and partners to bring the car to market as a British Super car offering.

University of Nottingham Student placement comes to an end....

We are pleased to have had Hugo Stephens with us here at GBS for several months on his university placement which came to an end last week. Hugo was studying MEng Mechanical Engineering at The University of Nottingham and was also the Mechanical Lead for the Solar Electric Car being built by the University's Racing Team. With his strong background in CAD/CAM, Hugo has been busy working with the GBS team to create the first Build Manual for the GBS Zero. The manual is now well underway and not too far of completion, which we aim to complete and release later this year. By being able to offer a complete manual, we are hoping it will make the decision to tackle your own Component Build less daunting, as this is something we have heard from some of our customers could be improved.

Hugo is now taking a short break before starting a new graduate job in Motorsport in a few weeks. We would like to thank Hugo for all his hard work whilst he has been with us, and we wish him well in his new graduate job which is in Motorsport and look forward to keeping in touch with him.  We are continuing to work with the University of Nottingham and looking at offering other University of Nottingham students a Postgraduate placement with us later this year. Read more about Hugo and his placement in an earlier news post here - Click here.

Yesterday the GBS team were delighted to welcome 26 USA University Students to GBS for a full factory tour.

The undergraduate university students are enrolled in the the Virginia Tech, Rising Sophomore Abroad Program (RSAP) The students are all studying general engineering. We were contacted earlier in the year to see if we could accommodate them for a factory tour. They are currently in the UK for a summer trip that is part of their spring-semester class designed that introduces students to global engineering and science, emphasizes the importance of cultural competency for engineers and scientists, and focuses on how differences in cultural, social and economic contexts influence engineering and science in practice.

The tour was split into two groups and led by Richard and Matt which covered all areas of GBS including the workshop, design room, clean assembly room, engineering machine shop, parts and spares store and shop and then back to the showroom where it finished for more questions and answers. All the students enjoyed the visit and were impressed with what the GBS team do and offer.

Motul and the Witham Motorsport have supplied us with their products for several years and we were excited to work with them on this special project. The Zero is hand built bespoke to your individual specification and the Zero Motul Edition was certainly an example of that, the car that had been spec’d out between ourselves and Motul which has some very nice unique Motul Design features that you will be able to see if you are coming to our Cars & Coffee event.

The Zero Motul Edition is powered by a Ford Duratec engine, specially prepared by Neil Brown Engineering, the company that provides the motive power for the UK FIA Formula 4 championship  - a series where Motul is proud to be the lubricant partner, providing the spec engine oil for all competitors.

The Zero Motul Edition has been seen at many different events since it was revealed for the very first time at the Silverstone Classic Show last year. Here are just a few events where it can be seen over the next few months, The Suffolk Show – 31st May & 1st June, Lincolnshire Show – 22nd & 23rd June and Norfolk Show – 29th & 30th June. Updates on the Motul-Edition GBS Zero can be found on Motul, Witham Motorsport, GBS and related UK Social Media sites too. You can see the full story and build of this very special Zero here.

The Motul Edition Zero will hopefully also be joining us on our Jubilee Zero Run Out that we have planned for Thursday 2nd June. If you would like to join us in your Zero then please find more details here.

Another University of Nottingham student joins the GBS Team for a few months…..

We have been working with The University of Nottingham to offer Postgraduate placements at GBS, and last year we were delighted to welcome Sreeyesh Galla to the GBS Team. Sreeyesh who has now graduated from the University of Nottingham, worked with our marketing team whilst he was with us for his placement.

We were pleased to recently welcome Hugo Stephens to GBS for a placement. Hugo is currently studying MEng Mechanical Engineering at The University of Nottingham and is the Mechanical Lead for the Solar Electric Car being built by the University's Racing Team. With his strong background in CAD/CAM, Hugo is working with the Design and Engineering team to create the first Build Manual for the GBS Zero. We hope that by being able to offer a complete manual, it will make the decision to tackle your own Component Build less daunting, as this is something we have heard from some of our customers could be improved. Additionally, the documentation of a standardised sequence for our Factory Build cars will improve quality and consistency.

"I was excited to be given the chance to come to GBS to work on a real-world project, as I felt that it would provide brilliant exposure to the techniques and processes used to produce a commercial sports car. It has been a great environment to learn, and the team have been welcoming and happy to answer my questions. I've enjoyed applying the techniques I've picked up at University to the work I have been doing and have developed a number of new skills along the way. I'd thoroughly recommend a placement at GBS for anyone who would like to gain a different perspective of the automotive industry and find out what it's really like! I would like to thank the Placements Team at the University of Nottingham for their assistance and GBS for the opportunity." Hugo Stephens

Once Hugo finishes his studies and placement with us, he will be returning to the University of Nottingham Racing Team over the summer to prepare for the iLumen European Solar Challenge at Circuit Zolder, before starting a graduate job in Motorsport in September.

We are also looking at offering other University of Nottingham students a Postgraduate placement throughout the year.
