The Crossland family’s self-build, LNER inspired GBS Zero....

By Andrew Crossland on behalf of the Crossland family.

A_dad.jpg

This is the story of The Crossland family and our GBS Zero. Sadly, our story starts on a very sad note. In January 2019, our Dad was diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer. By the time it was diagnosed, it was too late to treat. However, as a family we all saw how it never broke his spirit and, in reality, actually cemented his strength, positivity and love of life. The following story should illustrate how true that is.

The early stages of cancer involve rest and extensive periods of realisation. For Dad, that meant time talking to family, processing his diagnosis and switching off by watching TV. Of the many series Dad watched, one episode of The Grand Tour stood out - where the team went to Mongolia and build a kit car. As the kit car raced across various obstacles, Dad became inspired to start another adventure. From that moment Dad decided he wanted to buy a kit car; and it took very little to persuade his sons James and Andrew to join in.

Within a month we had selected a car - a Zero by Great British Sports Cars who are based in the nearby town of Ollerton, Nottinghamshire. We took Dad to visit the factory and knew immediately that this was the place to get that dream car. Steve and Richard showed us around the factory, introduced us to the team and where the car would be built. Driving away from the factory we quickly decided that we wanted to work with GBS who, like The Crossland’s, are a family at heart.

Throughout the build of the car, GBS worked with us on all of details of the build and design. Numerous calls and emails followed. As we toured various hospitals and met with various consultants, Dad was involved. Sadly, Dad’s medical condition deteriorated and he passed away in July - leaving a devastated family but one strangely motivated and empowered by the attitude Dad took to his life. It’s worth saying how he never once complained about being diagnosed. For Dad it was part of his life and the path weaved for him. Ahead of him lay obstacles and targets, just like life always had. A major target was James’s birthday - and a speech that, typical of Dad, left us all crying and laughing. Treatment was a path to be walked. Hurry on Sundown, see what tomorrow brings. Life’s for living. We took every day step by step as a family and as close as we always had been.

James and I were fortunate to have that closeness throughout our upbringing. One of our earliest memories is standing on a grass bank in Retford watching a beautiful blue steam train on the East Coast Mainline. James, Dad, Grandad, our Great Grandfather and myself all worked on the railways and we grew up exploring our great country or visiting friends by train - initially on a free rail pass as part of Dad’s job. Trips to York with friends, girlfriends and family didn’t feel right without a trip to the National Railway Museum. In each trip came a seminal moment; walking up to Mallard. The locomotive was designed by Nigel Gresley and built opposite Dad’s office in Gresley House. Synonymous with an age of speed, Mallard became the world’s fastest running at 126mph in 1939. That record still stands today.

As a family, we have a tradition in the National Railway Museum of placing our hands on Mallard and uttering the immortal words “how are you doing old girl” before taking photos. In family, folklore these words were passed down from our Grandad who used to fire the engine. To friends from around the world it was a Crossland oddity and one that as a family we got used to being laughed at as we took photos. To James and I, Mallard is that beautiful blue train that we watched from the grass bank during our childhood.

A few weeks after Dad passed away, I visited York with a close friend. As is traditional and non-negotiable, Mallard featured in the trip and memories came flooding back. A few weeks later, James and I contacted GBS with our idea - to change the theme of our car from British Racing Green to a custom designed paying homage to Mallard and our relationship with it.

Initially, it was an email sent with much trepidation. We actually made two requests to GBS - firstly for completely customised paint work and also to run the car on biofuel (more on that in another blog). Steve, Richard and the team immediately responded and they seemed genuinely excited by the idea. Within a few weeks, we visited the factory where Richard had marked up the vehicle with his proposed design. The attention to detail Richard had paid to the design blew me away, and he spotted parts of the locomotive’s design that I had never seen before. This was also Mum’s first trip to GBS and we were quickly joined by the rest of the GBS team to discuss the design. Perhaps it was the emotion of the day for us, but we genuinely felt an energy and excitement about the car. We drove away with a smile.

At this stage it’s also important to mention a small additional feature to the vehicle which is important to myself. I work in renewable energy with environmentalism and carbon saving really critical to my being. As a result of discussions with GBS, we believe that this will be the first biofuel compatible Zero in the world, meaning that I can drive the car in the knowledge that it has environmental credentials which drive everything I do in my professional life.

2.jpg

Within weeks the car was painted and the family sat enjoying photos of our beautiful garter blue vehicle coming together via emails from GBS and on social media – an amazing feet given that we were living our lives in New Zealand, Warwick and Retford.

The big reveal and delivery of the vehicle came on 17th December 2019 at the GBS factory in Ollerton. It was clear to us as a family how excited GBS were about the car, and that was evident by the smiles and warm welcome we (Mum, Nana, James and I) received on arrival. Steve, Ruth and Richard were evidently thrilled by the car and appearance. The result is a stunningly beautiful, tastefully delivered and hugely charismatic custom painted vehicle that we are thrilled to start putting together. The car looks even better in person than in the photos.

Writing this we are about to embark on the build. As a family we will share photos with you via GBS. We also hope that, once built, the car will be used by GBS to showcase the Zero and the customisation options available to enthusiasts – from paint to biofuels.

As Great British Sports Cars we were delighted to have met Andrew and James’s dad and pleased that he got the chance to visit the GBS factory, we are sure he would be very proud of his Sons and Family. As soon as the Crosslands let us know about their paint idea, we thought this would be stunning and we were excited as it is something very different and also very special.

The Zero was sat in our workshop for a while before it was collected and attracted a lot of attention especially when it was on display at our Christmas Cars & Coffee event beginning of December. Their Zero spec is a 175 calibre and will be powered by a Ford 2L Zetec engine and is biofuel ready. We look forward to following the Crossland’s build and sharing more with you as it progresses.

Recently we had this electric Model T vehicle that is a replicas of the famous 1910 Model T Ford in the workshop, it has been with us for several months as there was a lot of work involved including a lot of fabrication, electrical and more to prepare it to the IVA standard. We were pleased that it has now passed and is fully registered and was collected last week by the owner. Before it went we went on a short road test and took a few photos to share with you all. Its being used for tours in the city of Cambridge.
We now have a full workshop again with several Zero’s being prepared and panelled for paint, as well as several nice spec Zero factory builds in progress. Rolls-Royce Motor Club visit GBS for a Factory Tour….

We get a lot of enquires for Factory Tours for owners clubs and sports car clubs all over the country, earlier this year we were approached by Henry a GBS Customer who has a Zero Race to ask if we would do a factory tour for  a club he is a club secretary for which is the Rolls Royce Motor Club.

We offer a few Factory Tour dates throughout the year including weekends and evenings and on Saturday we were pleased to welcome 25 members from the Rolls-Royce Motor Club to the GBS factory for a  tour of our facilities with Richard and the GBS team. During their tour they saw a lot of behind the scenes of how our bespoke sports cars and products are produced. Thomas was in our Machine Shop demonstrating what he does on the CNC machines and how parts are designed and manufactured. Two members of the club have built a Zero sports car and it was great to see that one of them arrived in his Zero, despite the heavy rain on the day!

Feed back from the tour was very positive and enjoyed by all, one member emailed to say
GBS is an amazing company. Their engineering exceeded by far my expectations. They can potentially redefine the kit-car and definitely set new standards for the "sevens". Their parts are retrofitted in other "sevens".
It is one of the those stories "if what is available on the market is not good enough, DIY" And all these with very competitive prices. – Anestis G, Rolls-Royce employees Motor Club

The morning generally starts with tea/coffee and biscuits in the GBS Show room then onto the GBS Workshop, Design & Development Room, Machine & Engineering, Clean Room, Kit Spares Store and then back into the showroom for more refreshments, questions and often a test drive in one of our Zero demonstrators.
Our GBS Factory Tours are free but we ask for a kind donation to be made to our chosen charities which are Cancer Research UK and Notts & Lincs Air Ambulance.

We hope that the Rolls Royce Motor Club all enjoyed their visit to GBS and we would like to say thank you for your kind donations that you made on the day. Click here to see a short video that we created of when the Rolls Royce Motor Club members visited us.

For more details on our factory tours that we offer and to look to book one please click here or contact us.

Nice to have customers Zero back in the GBS Workshop from Norway…..

It was nice to have this GBS Zero back in our workshop last week. GBS customer Peer Moberg from Norway collected his full Zero self build kit from the factory earlier this year in January and has been busy building it since he collected it. Peer returned with his nearly completed 2.5 Duratec powered Zero build last week for us to do some of the final fittings and engine set up.

Peers was with us for just over 4 days and all the GBS team worked together to complete the build and set up including some late nights.  The high spec Zero looked stunning once all completed and Peers enjoyed a road test with Richard once the engine was all set up.

This stunning Zero is a 230 Calibre Spec that features - LHD Standard Sport Chassis, 2.5ltr Ford Duratec engine, with ATR Throttle Bodies, Life ECU, Painted with Stripes, Carbon Fibre Bodywork Pack, Rear Diffuser, Momo Steering Wheel and Quick Release Boss, Heated windscreen, ATR Suspension and ATR Brakes.

Great Weather, Cars and Cake, big thank you to everyone who joined us.…….They just get better and better each time we hold our GBS Cars & Coffee events, and what a fantastic day we had on Saturday with a car park full of sports cars. We would like to say a big THANK YOU to you all for joining us and helping us make it such a great event and enjoyable day, it was nice to see so many Zero’s together in the car park along with a wide variety of other sports cars. It was nice to see several new Zero’s that were newly registered also join us for the first time. The gates opened at 10am and by 10.20am the car park was already getting full, the weather was perfect and could not have been better for us.

The GBS and Kit Spares show room was very busy with people and the Kit Spares   was also very busy with sales and enquires. As usual the cakes attracted a lot of attention and certainly went down well with not many left along with the unlimited supply of tea and coffee. We would also like to thank Powerlite Units for supporting our event and supplying some lovely cakes, we now have a full range of Powerlite Units products on our Kit Spares Website and in our showroom.  Another great thing about our GBS Cars & Coffee events that we love, is that we are able to raise money for our 2 chosen charities which are the Cancer Research UK and The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, we all feel and hope you agree that The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is a fantastic service and has helped & will continue to help many people, as well as the Cancer Research UK that is again a fantastic charity that makes a big difference to so many people and their families. We will let you know how much money we have raised.

The GBS Camera was out capturing the day and all the action, please see a few photographs from the day and more can be seen on our GBS Facebook page later this week. We will be announcing our next GBS Cars & Coffee event date very soon which will be happening in December.

Father and Son to enjoy the Zero Build project together....

GBS Customers Jerry & Matt Haller (Father & Son) visited our stand at the Autosports Show earlier this year in January at the NEC in Birmingham where they first saw the Zero’s on display on our stand. They then came to see us at the factory and enjoyed a factory tour, meeting all the team, seeing all the behind the scenes of what we do….. They went away with plenty of ideas and options, as well as both enjoying a test drive in our demonstrator. A few weeks later we got a email to say they have decided on their Zero spec and were ready to place their order, so they came up to the factory on a Saturday and confirmed the spec and options of their kit and payed the deposit. Then last week their stunning painted Zero arrived back at the factory and we had the opportunity to take a few photographs of it before it was delivered to them the next day.

This is going to be a project for a Father and Son who are going to enjoy together, we look forward to following their build and seeing it progress and sharing photos with you all.

We have lots of Zero self build kits currently being prepared for collection over the few weeks as well as some that are soon to be exported. We are also expecting our new demonstrator to arrive back from the paint shop later this week, so keep a look out on our social media to see more about that!

Another GBS Zero in America & one arrives in Australia…

AA_01.jpg

The Zero range is available in both RHD & LHD and is sold worldwide, we had a Zero kit collected a few weeks ago that will soon be arriving with our new customer in Canada. We are also pleased to hear that the Zero Race kit we sent to New York a few weeks ago got there last week. As did this Zero kit that we sent to Australia a several weeks ago, we now look forward to receiving photos of these Zero builds and following how they progress around the world and sharing with you.

A few weekends back at the factory we had Bruce Coupe come and collect his Zero kit from us, Bruce’s Zero chassis had to be modified to suit his engine choice which was a Kawasaki GTR 1400 motorbike engine. This was no problem for us as we design and manufacturer the Zero chassis in house, we have full control over modifications and developments. So if you are looking for something different or have any questions about what is possible then please get in touch with us, we look forward to hearing from you. Or please click here for more details on the engine options that are available for the Zero range.

We are also looking forward to sharing photographs of our new Generation 2 Zero demonstrator with you hopefully later this week as it is due back from paint very soon! Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram, as it might be shared on there sooner! @gbs_cars

The NEW Second Generation Zero Chassis & New GBS Demonstrator….

The new Second Generation Zero chassis has had a very positive response since it was launched a few months ago and the improvements have been noticed. We have created a short video that walks around and talks about the NEW Second Generation Zero Sports Car.

We are also pleased and very excited to be having a new Zero demonstrator very soon. After 12 hard months of development work, our test vehicle is undergoing a transformation to become the new Gen 2 Zero demonstrator. Fitted with all the latest components from GBS and ATR Products and powered by the amazing Ford 2.5L Duratec, this is going to be something special. Keep an eye out for the final result in the next few weeks, we will be sending it off to be painted very soon! You can follow us on Instagram to see more of what we are up to and follow the build of our new Zero demonstrator. Follow us @gbs_cars

Earlier this morning we had a very nice painted Zero arrive back at the factory. We all love the customer’s choice of colour, and we can't wait to see more photos as the build progresses over the next few months, which is being delivered to its new owners who are a Father and Son next week. Another Zero that also arrived back from our paint shop earlier this week is now in our workshop in its build bay for the rest of the build to be completed.

Yes we offer Finance.... Making it even easier to own a Zero!

D_GjRffWwAI9cfP.jpg

We often get asked the question about finance on the Zero’s and products and for details of what we can offer. We are pleased to have partnered up with Pegasus Finance which can give you an instant online quote and even allows you to complete the agreement online.
Rates may vary depending on the loan amount and individual circumstances but for example, for £3,500.00 on finance for the Zero Mazda starter self build kit monthly payments would be around £85.00 spread over 48 months. (depending on the loan amount and individual circumstances)

We are seeing that finance is already proving popular not just for the Zero kits and factory builds but also for parts. You can also Finance parts which could mean you could upgrade your Zero to the new ATR Throttle Bodies or new brake upgrade kit and spread the costs over months/ years.

For more details on the finance with Pegasus please click below or contact us and we will do our best to advice you.

We also see on forums and social media and get asked about Insurance, who is best to Insure the Zero’s and similar sports cars?….
There are many Insurance companies out there who offer great competitive prices and services for the Zero’s and similar sports cars, but we are pleased to have worked with two popular Insurance companies who offer competitive prices and who we have set up a dealer accounts with.

They are Cherished Vehicle Insurance Service (part of the A-Plan Insurance company) who are a specialist Kit Car Insurance with other benefits which also include Track Day Insurance which might be of interest for a lot of you who do track days in the Zero’s and  Adrian Flux which is another popular Insurance company for the Zero range and other similar sports cars.

Whilst Paul was here at the Factory we also welcomed a USA GBS customer Michael Etzel and his wife to the GBS Factory who were over in the UK. We also have another Zero Mazda Kit currently being prepared that will be going to a customer in Canada very soon and then another to the USA. Goodwood.JPG

We are not at Goodwood Festival Speed this weekend, but we are pleased to confirm we can be seen at Goodwood Revival later this year with the Zero’s. Please visit our event page to see more details about the Goodwood Revival event and other events that we have planned for 2019.

Last month you may have seen that we had GBS Customer Peter Cartwright’s Zero back with us in the workshop for the ATR Products Brake Upgrade fitment. Peter competes with his 2.5 Duratec powered Zero in Sprints and does several Track Days a year. Peter’s first event since he had the new upgrade fitted was a few weekends ago at Lydden Hill and it was great to hear that it was a success and enjoyable.

Peter Said “Quite a short circuit (just over 1m I think) and each timed run just short of two laps (ie from leave pit lane to re-enter pit lane).

The entry list was not large meaning there was time for 6 runs – or 7 in my case with a re-run for being baulked right at the end of one run. So with 14 laps, a decent number to assess the car. My conclusion was that is definitely better as currently set up.
Overall, Lydden was my best outing yet and I drove back with a big smile on my face!
Next date at Snetterton in July with the Lotus 7 club”.

We hope to see more race photographs from Peter’s day at Lydden once they are released.

The new ATR Products Brake upgrade is now very popular with many Zero’s now have it fitted. You can see more details and images on the Brake upgrade options on our parts website Kit Spares www.kitspares.co.uk or to book your Zero or sports car in our Workshop please visit our workshop services page.

Amazing views in the South of France with the Zero….

We recently received these stunning photographs from a GBS customer in France of him out in his Zero with his son enjoying the south of France.

GBS Zero owner Anton said “We had to go into the private domain above Villefranche to get this "golden" spot with a view just by the road.”

The Zero is the ideal sports car for touring Europe and enjoying on road trips across the UK. Also recently GBS Customers Bill Bridger and Graham Cousins enjoyed a big road trip in their newly registered Zero around Europe covering lots of miles and many different countries. We will share more on their trip and more stunning photos with you very soon.

If you have any road trips planned this Summer in your Zero, then let us know or send us some photographs. We would love to see them, please visit our contact page for more details on how to contact us.
